"Raptor Boyfriend was actually re-written three times, which is probably unusual in game development, specifically visual novels."

Tycho Magazine spoke to Lindsay Rollins and Sloane Smith from Rocket Adrift Games about Raptor Boyfriend.

Raptor Boyfriend is part of the epic 2023 Queer Games Bundle, a collection of lgbti-friendly games available on itch.io

There's something about Raptor Boyfriend that elevates it above a lot of games, the whole package is very tight from concept to art to writing. Can you tell us a bit about the team and team culture that created such great results?

That's really nice of you to say!

We were definitely very focused on our goals with the game. We had inspirations (teen dramas) that helped guide us and we put a lot of importance on pacing, characters and themes.

Raptor Boyfriend was actually re-written three times, which is probably unusual in game development, specifically visual novels. As for the art, we had an organized review process that helped ensure that everything worked together in the best way it could.

On top of all that, the three of us have fairly eclectic taste in media, and are very open to coming up with absurd ideas that also work on an emotionally earnest level.

Raptor Boyfriend is a few years old now, looking back on it, what do you love most about the game personally? If you were to do a sequel, is there anything you would want to try differently?

Sloane: I love the characters. I feel like they're almost real people that are out there somewhere in northern Ontario haha. I personally put a lot of myself in the characters, especially Stella.

Lindsay: I am particularly proud of the visual direction, style, and presentation of the game. It took a lot of extra effort to include different angles and close-ups of each character model and scale them to the backgrounds of each scene.

A lot of players are surprised by the sincerity and realism of the game compared to their initial expectations about a skateboarding dinosaur. That seems like a double edged sword to me, has it ever felt that way to Rocket Adrift?

Queer Man Peering Into A Rock Pool

The short answer is yes.

From a marketing perspective, it's difficult to have people perceive the game as anything more than a gimmick game. It has gotten attention due to this, but it's also made it a struggle to sell the game as a sincere, story-driven game. It's always nice to have people surprised by Raptor Boyfriend's story.

A.S. Only

Your next game, Psychroma, looks (and sounds) amazing. Has the development of Raptor Boyfriend informed any of the process for making your next game? Can you tell us a bit about your creative aims with Psychroma?

We learned a lot from the development of Raptor Boyfriend.

We were very inexperienced and brute-forced a lot of problems, rather than planning for them ahead of time. We also had to deal with a lot of the development struggles and obstacles on our own.

With Psychroma, we've been given the opportunity to accept outside help, as well as streamlining our process. I think we're also trying our best to tell a really sincere and impactful story with Psychroma, and not obscure that behind a gimmick.

With Psychroma, we're committed to telling a personal story that we feel will resonate with many players, and is immediately apparent through the visual presentation, tone, and subject matter.

We're looking forward to Psychroma!
